What is AIHA?

What is AIHA?

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia [AIHA] is a collection of disorders characterized by the presence of auto-antibodies that bind to the patient’s own erythrocytes, leading to premature red cell destruction (hemolysis) and, when the rate of hemolysis exceeds the ability of the bone marrow to replace the destroyed red cells, to anemia and its attendant signs and symptoms. In simple terms, it is an immune system disease in which the body attacks and destroys its own red blood cells (Wikipedia). In dogs with AIHA, red blood cells are still being manufactured in the bone marrow, but once released into the circulation, they have a shorter-than-normal life span.
