What is Iodised salt?

Iodised salt (also spelled iodized salt) is table salt mixed with a minute amount of various salts of the element iodine. Iodine is a micronutrient and dietary mineral that is naturally present in the food supply. Edible salt can be iodised by spraying it with a potassium iodate or potassium iodide solution. Most table salt also has added iodine, an essential nutrient that helps maintain a healthy thyroid. Sea salt and table salt have the same basic nutritional value, despite the fact that sea salt is often promoted as being healthier. Sea salt and table salt contain comparable amounts of sodium by weight (see: Wikipedia).
